The television is a household staple, and for good reason. Not only do they provide entertainment, but they also keep us informed on the latest news, weather and sports. But how do these devices work?
Televisions work by converting electrical signals into visual images. These electrical signals are sent to the television from a broadcasting station. The television then uses a cathode ray tube, or CRT, to create the images that we see on the screen.
The CRT is a vacuum tube that contains an electron gun. This gun fires electrons at the back of the screen. The electrons bounce off the back of the screen and create a glowing image. The brightness of the image is controlled by the strength of the electron beam.
The color of the image is created by using a phosphor coating on the back of the screen. This coating is made up of tiny dots of red, green and blue. When the electron beam hits the phosphor coating, it causes the dots to glow. By varying the intensity of the electron beam, different colors can be created.
Televisions also use a process called scanning to create the images that we see on the screen. This process begins at the top left corner of the screen and moves across the screen in a horizontal line. As it reaches the right side of the screen, it moves down to the next line and starts again at the left side. This process is repeated until the entire screen is covered.
The speed at which the electron beam moves across the screen is called the scan rate. The scan rate is measured in hertz, or cycles per second. In order for the human eye to perceive a continuous image, the scan rate must be at least 30 hertz.
Televisions come in a variety of sizes, from small portable units to large screen models. The size of the television is determined by the size of the CRT. The larger the CRT, the larger the television.
Televisions can also be divided into two categories: analog and digital. Analog televisions use a traditional CRT to create the images on the screen. Digital televisions use a digital display, such as a plasma screen or an LCD screen.
Digital televisions offer a number of advantages over analog models. They provide a sharper image, use less electricity and are more durable. However, they are also more expensive.
