What happened to HTC Phones?

The rise and fall of HTC phones

HTC began as a manufacturer of laptop computers in Taiwan. In 1998, they released their first smartphone, the HTC Dream, which was also the first Android phone. HTC quickly rose to prominence as a leading Android phone maker, releasing a series of popular phones such as the HTC Desire and the HTC One. However, in recent years, HTC has struggled to compete with the likes of Samsung and Apple, and their market share has declined.
Despite this, HTC remains one of the most popular smartphone brands, and their phones are still highly regarded for their quality and features.

The early days - HTC as an ODM

In the early days, HTC was an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), designing and manufacturing mobile devices for other companies. HTC’s first client was Microsoft, for whom it designed the PocketPC-based HTC Butterfly smartphone, which was released in 2002. Microsoft subsequently went on to develop its own line of smartphones, the Windows Phone, and HTC shifted its focus to designing and manufacturing its own line of smartphones, the HTC One series. The HTC One (M7) was released in 2013, followed by the HTC One (M8) in 2014. The latest model in the HTC One series is the HTC One (M9), released in 2015. HTC has also manufactured a number of other Android-based smartphones, including the HTC Desire, HTC Wildfire, and HTC Sensation.

The turn of the century - HTC's first branded smartphone

When HTC first started out, the company was known primarily for its work in the mobile phone industry. However, in recent years, the Taiwanese company has become one of the leading smartphone manufacturers in the world.
The company's first branded smartphone was the HTC Dream, which was released in 2008. Since then, HTC has released a number of other successful smartphones, such as the HTC One series and the HTC Desire series.
In recent years, HTC has also been working on developing its own operating system, called HTC Sense. This operating system is based on the Android platform and is designed to provide users with a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.
HTC's work in the smartphone industry has not gone unnoticed. In 2013, the company was awarded the 'Best in Innovation' award at the Mobile World Congress.
The company is continuing to work on new and innovative products, and it is expected that HTC will remain a leading player in the smartphone market for years to come.

The glory days - HTC's heyday

HTC's glory days can be traced back to its early days as a manufacturer of notebook computers. The company was founded in 1997 and released its first smartphone in 2000. HTC's early success was due in part to its focus on quality and innovation. Its products were well-built and featured cutting-edge features that were not available on other devices. HTC was also one of the first companies to adopt Android as its primary operating system. This allowed HTC to release a series of highly successful Android smartphones, such as the HTC Dream and HTC Desire.
HTC's success continued into the 2010s, with the release of a number of critically acclaimed smartphones, such as the HTC One X and HTC One M8. However, the company has struggled in recent years, as it has been unable to keep up with the pace of innovation set by its rivals. This has led to a decline in HTC's market share and profitability.
Despite its current difficulties, HTC remains one of the most respected names in the smartphone industry. The company's devices are still highly regarded for their build quality and design. HTC is also still an important player in the virtual reality market, with its Vive line of products.
It is clear that HTC has had a long and successful history. The company has been a pioneer in the smartphone industry and has released some truly iconic devices. However, HTC is facing some challenges in the present day. Only time will tell if the company can recapture its former glory.

The dark days - HTC's decline
HTC was once a major player in the smartphone market, but in recent years the company has been on a steady decline. In 2013, HTC was the world's ninth largest smartphone manufacturer with a market share of 5.8 percent. But by 2018, HTC's market share had fallen to just 0.4 percent.
What caused HTC's decline? There are a number of factors.
Firstly, HTC was late to the game when it came to Android. The company didn't release its first Android phone until 2009, a year after the operating system was first launched. By contrast, Samsung and LG both had Android phones on the market by 2008.
Secondly, HTC was never able to match Samsung's marketing clout. Samsung spends billions of dollars each year on marketing and advertising, while HTC has always been a much smaller company.
Thirdly, HTC has been plagued by a series of bad decisions and poor execution. For example, the company bet big on Windows Phone in 2010 and released a number of Windows Phone-powered devices. But Windows Phone never took off and HTC was left with a number of unsold devices.
Fourthly, HTC has been slow to innovate. The company has always been known for its good design, but in recent years it has failed to keep up with the likes of Apple and Samsung when it comes to new features and technology.
Finally, HTC has been hit hard by the rise of Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo have all eaten into HTC's market share in recent years.
So what does the future hold for HTC? The company is currently in the process of selling its smartphone business to Google. It's not clear what will happen to HTC after the sale, but it's likely that the company will become a much smaller player in the smartphone market.

The present day - HTC's current situation

HTC's current situation is not good. The company is struggling to keep up with the competition, and its sales have been declining for several years. In 2017, HTC's revenue was just $2.6 billion, which is a far cry from the $30 billion it was worth in 2011. The company has been losing money for the past few years, and it is now worth less than half of what it was worth just a few years ago.
HTC is currently in the process of trying to turnaround its business. The company has been working on new products, such as the HTC Vive virtual reality headset, and it has also been investing in new technologies, such as blockchain. However, it remains to be seen whether or not these efforts will be enough to save the company. Only time will tell.

The future - what next for HTC?

HTC has had a tough few years. The Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer was once the darling of the tech world, but it has since lost its way somewhat. Its share price has tumbled, and it has failed to keep up with the likes of Apple and Samsung in terms of sales and market share.
But HTC is not giving up. The company is betting big on virtual reality, and it has high hopes for its new HTC Vive headset. The Vive is a joint venture with Valve, the makers of the Steam gaming platform, and it is one of the most advanced VR headsets on the market.
HTC is also betting on its new flagship smartphone, the HTC 10, to turn its fortunes around. The 10 is a beautifully designed and well-specced phone, but it faces an uphill battle against the likes of the iPhone and Galaxy S7.
So what next for HTC? The company is pinning its hopes on VR and its flagship phone, but it remains to be seen whether these bets will pay off.
